STORY ( GAME )
Kaeya hails from Khaenri’ah, sent to Mondstadt at a very young age in order to gather information as a spy. He was placed with the Ragnvindrs in order to have access to the city intel from it’s very core. He was very close to Diluc until the night his father was killed, tipping the scales for Kaeya to reveal his secrets.
He is sarcastic, secretive, manipulative, and a sweet-talker, who has been called the Thinker of the Knights. He gathers knowledge through his own means, and sends the Traveler on a goose chase or two. Kaeya knows how to talk his way out of most situations, and has left his private life a mystery up to this point. Though he leaves clues for both the Traveler and Venti, he hasn’t revealed his motives.
In the comic, he’s also shown to have little regard for human life, and a bit of a temper.
STORY ( VERSE )
Much like that owl of Dragonspine that he mentions to the Traveler, Kaeya also enjoys peering into the minds of others without revealing much about himself. He’ll hold onto so many secrets about himself, that even he’s often unsure how he really feels.
Kaeya struggles with trusting others, on the simple basis that he feels they can’t trust him. After his altercation with Diluc, he feels completely terrified of opening up to others, and has rather bitter interactions with his old familiar. Between the two of them, he feels like he’s the only one who still cares, and will push his buttons on purpose. On an uneven playing field where emotions are involved, he’s also bitter towards his past, and doesn’t feel like he belongs in Mondstadt’s future.
Though, he’s become reluctantly close with it’s Archon, Venti, his relationship with the Knights is one that’s easily strained when pushed past face-value. Something he almost pushed too far with Jean. He’s self aware that he’s part of the order simply to further his intel, but he’s torn about using it for the side of Mond, or the side of Khaenri’ah.
Underneath his eyepatch lies more bitterness towards his nation, because it contains both a symbol of his bloodline, and an unruly mess of Abyss energies after being tampered with by Dottore when he was younger. That touch from the Abyss causes Kaeya to suffer from frequent nightmares.
Growing up, he often relied on Diluc to calm him down from those bad dreams. As an adult without that safety net, he eventually finds out that they’re less prominent when he sleeps with Childe. After meeting the Harbinger at Liyue’s Lantern Rites festival, he’s someone that Kaeya gradually falls in love with.
He also recalls being lulled to sleep by Dainsleif back when he was still a toddler. The two reunited when the Royal Guard found himself in Mondstadt. While Kaeya initially ran from his past, he realized it was hard to run from someone who seemed to genuinely care for his well-being. After an incident between Dainsleif and Celestia, conflicting with the Abyss order, Kaeya realizes that he’s subconsciously fallen in love with him.
Kaeya has a temper, and can lose control when he’s too angry. In partial thanks to Khaenri’ah’s harsh nature. Also having a tendency to shutdown when things get too heavy, he’s rude, self-centered, and a risk-taker during those moments. Proving to be quite the handful.
Despite that, Kaeya holds onto a love for others that he barely even wants to admit to. He tends to show he cares while staying out of the spotlight, i.e. throwing that surprise party for Jean. He’s currently living in Mondstadt, in an oddly domestic relationship with both Dainsleif and Childe. He’s even given them promise rings, and they care for a cat named Tilly, whom Kaeya found as a stray kitten outside Angel’s Share.
